Yes, Pittsburgh is struggling a bit, and they are on the road this week. The rankings are very firm though this week that Pittsburgh belongs right at the 10 spot in the league, and that St. Louis is right at the 28-29 spot. The matchup that could be a problem for Pittsburgh is their passing offense, but St. Louis’ defense isn’t good enough to capitalize on it. We think Pittsburgh takes some strides towards getting playoff ready this week.

Dallas is a 22 point favorite, but shouldn’t relax too much. They are trending a little bit cool compared to the rest of league right now, and at a time when you want to be starting to peak. Win Grade shows they have been over playing their abilities, and we think that might be beginning to show. Carolina fans shouldn’t get too excited by all this though, as they don’t match up well with Dallas in even one fundamental category.

Despite them being favored in the rankings by 9 points, there is some cause for concern with Tampa Bay. Win Grade shows Tampa Bay as being over rated and Real Points says they have played a fairly soft schedule. History isn’t really on their side either; the prediction type has a winning percentage of only .630. So why aren’t we calling the upset for San Francisco? Well none of the numbers go over the tipping point to make that call. San Francisco sports only a 2-5 record at home, nothing for us to get giddy over. We’re taking Tampa Bay with caution here.

Detroit is steamrolling backwards right now, and has a good opportunity to stop that with Kansas City coming into town. The rankings both like Detroit and both rankings agree with where the teams stand.  Real Points shows that Kansas City has been tested, but the matchup just doesn’t show anything that Kansas City will be able to over power Detroit with. We expect Detroit to get out of its own way today, and add another mark to the win column.

Usually a matchup between these two teams is a difficult toss up to predict, but the stats are leaning strongly for Cincinnati today. Looking at Win Grade specifically, we find that Cleveland is a strong upset Candidate despite their 9-5 record. Win Grade also shows that Cleveland is overplaying its abilities, not by a ton, but by enough to question their record. Neither team has played a tough schedule, but we think that is going to hurt Cleveland more with them playing on the road. The final straw is Cleveland’s weak rush defense, which is likely to provide just the spark needed for struggling Cincinnati.

Not much to expect here. Its #1 versus number #32 in both the rankings, and the only thing Miami has going for them is that they have been tested pretty well to this point. We know Miami fans would like something positive here, but their one strong point is up against a monster. Miami has the 4th best pass defense in the league, giving up only 179 yards per game. Too bad New England has the best pass offense in the league, gaining just shy of 300 yards per game. New England is a lock.

This is one of the better matchups of the week. Real Points likes Philadelphia, while Win Grade favors New Orleans. There should also be a good match up between the Philadelphia rush attack and the New Orleans defense. Its really a squeeze between the rankings, and although we think Philadelphia will probably be able to run the ball well, New Orleans' play at home is just good enough for them to hold on to the win, and their playoff hopes.

Another juicy matchup of the week. Although Win Grade thinks the two are a close match, Real Points is leaning heavily for New York. Looking deeper at Win Grade, it does suggest that New York is playing a little above its abilities, but not enough to out weigh the large gap between the two in Real Points. We should note that Buffalo has played a good schedule this year, and is above .500 at home, but once again New York has a counter to that with their very nice 6-1 record on the road.

Both rankings heavily favor Tennessee, and the matchup on passing isn’t going to change that. Tennessee has a solid defense, and look for them to shut down New York’s offense in the air and on the ground, and to win a few turnovers in the process.

On the surface, Oakland presents a few matchup problems for teams. Oakland can move the ball well on the ground, and will likely manage to continue to do so on Sunday. Oakland also knows how to defend against the pass, which isn’t one of Jacksonville’s strongest points. The problem is Oakland just doesn’t bring their game together as a whole, where as Jacksonville is a complete team that knows how to take advantage of its strengths and opportunities. This shows very well in the rankings. Jacksonville is firmly placed in the top 5 in both while Oakland is in the bottom 10 in both. Oakland will likely have some bright moments, but we don’t see them being able to capitalize on them, especially in Jacksonville.

The rankings in this matchup are looking for an upset. Real Points shows Seattle as having played a very soft schedule, and are an over rated team. Win Grade has signs that Baltimore has been playing well under its potential. The table is set for the upset, but there will be no dinner for Baltimore on Sunday. They just don’t have the matchup needed to pull off the upset. There is an appearance that Seattle will have problems rushing the football, but Seattle is going to give Baltimore fits with their pass attack, and that will open up the run for them. Baltimore is also one of the most fumble happy teams in the league, and Seattle is likely to take advantage of a few turnovers on Sunday.

This is the matchup of the week for us. Both teams are coming into this game with good trends, Minnesota being the third hottest team in the league and Washington being the eighth. The rankings like Minnesota, with just a hint that they are little over rated. Real Points shows that Washington has been well tested this year, and should be up for the task of playing in the Metrodome. The matchup that will determine this game is the Minnesota passing offense versus the Washington secondary. We think Tarvaris Jackson and Minnesota will get the job done, but if he struggles, Washington will be ready to pounce.

The numbers inside Real Points and Win Grade suggest that Indianapolis is over rated and over playing its abilities. We will address that down the line more when the playoffs arrive. Houston is a decent team and arrive on a warming trend, but they lack matchup potential here to do any real damage in this game. We could see a little light for them in their passing offense, but that is about it. In order to really pull off the upset, Houston needs to create turnovers, something they have struggled to do. Indianapolis has lost only 3 fumbles to this point, and we are sure Peyton Manning won’t be helping out with turning the ball over either.

When looking at the rankings, both teams are firmly locked in their current spots, with little indication that either team is playing better or worse than the rankings would suggest.  There are two slight matchup problems for San Diego, with their slightly inefficient passing and Denver’s consistent rush attack. Still, with San Diego playing at home these issues aren’t anything we expect the team to have difficulties with.  Added to this is that San Diego is hitting its best stride of the season and is currently the hottest team in the league. Denver just isn’t capable of handling this team on the road.
